After That Night by Karin Slaughter
Publisher’s summary
Will Trent and Sara Linton are back! This is the eleventh electrifying thriller featuring GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton from New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter.
After that night, nothing was ever the same again.
Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton’s life changed forever when a celebratory night out ended in a violent attack that tore her world apart. Since then, Sara has remade her life. A successful doctor, engaged to a man she loves, she has finally managed to leave the past behind her.
Until one evening, on call in the ER, everything changes. Sara battles to save a broken young woman who’s been brutally attacked. But as the investigation progresses, led by GBI Special Agent Will Trent, it becomes clear that Dani Cooper’s assault is uncannily linked to Sara’s.
And it seems the past isn’t going to stay buried forever.
At the beginning of the book:
I’m so relieved that Sara and Will seem to be in a good rhythm with their relationship. So many of this series’ books start out with them at odds. I was getting bored reading about their miscommunications. I’m curious to find out more of the backstory of Sara’s past trauma.
Halfway through the book:
I believe I can see where this is headed, and I’m a bit annoyed at how unlikely the plot and explanations of Sara’s experiences seem to be. It’s just so complex, and you know what they say: the simplest answer is usually the correct answer. I have to keep reminding myself that this is just a story and sit back and enjoy being entertained.
Book complete:
I honestly did NOT see that ending coming. Just when I think I have this author’s number, she learns a new way to throw a loop. By the end, I was able to suspend belief about how unlikely the plot seemed and just enjoyed the storytelling. I will definitely read this one again, probably as part of going through the entire series again like I do from time to time.
